I have a question for you.  What ever happened to my puppyhood toy?  Don't tell me it was taken away from me because I grew too attached to it, and if you blame me for gutting and eating it, I will not want to believe you!  It is a blocked memory if I ever knew one.

Do you require pets be vaccinated? (top)

The law requires that you have your pets vaccinated for Rabies and have current proof of vaccination.  For hiking services we recommend getting your dog vaccinated for lyme decease.  If he is not, we will not held responsible should they encounter lyme decease from a tick.

What animals do you provide care for? (top)

We provide care for dogs, cats, birds, reptiles, ferrets, rabbits, small mammals, fish, and the occasional few horses, sheep, cows, or alpaca.  Please inform us the amount of farm animals you have.  If you have too many or you own a commercial farm we cannot offer you are services.

What is included in your pet sitting service? (top)

Besides tons of love and play a lot!  See our pet sitting page for more detail.

Do you board pets at your home? (top)

Unless it is an extreme circumstance, we do not board pets.  Your pet is more comfortable at home especially when you are gone.  This is why we decided to create a pet sitting business and not a boarding kennel.

Do you charge per pet?
(top)

The posted prices include up to two dogs and three cats per household.  For each additional dog or cat, there is a $5 surcharge per pet for daily walks or drop by visits.  For over night pet sitting, there is a $10 surcharge per dog and a $5 surcharge per cat.  If you have only cats, there is an additional $5 surcharge per cat after the fifth cat.

Who will be taking care of my pets? (top)

Either Adir, Dawn, Stan, or one of our Big Paw Pet Care associates.  Who ever does your pet sitting, walking, hiking, or running, you will meet him or her at your free meet n’ greet.  All of our associates must pass background checks, become animal first aid certified through the American Red Cross, and are bonded and insured through Big Paw Services.

Do we need to have a meet n‘ greet?
(top)

Yes we do!  That is why we offer it for free!  It is important for your pet, as well as yourself, to get to know us and see if we are compatible.  This is also a good time to get to know where the pet supplies are and discuss the usual habits of the pet.  We will also be reviewing the service agreement, sign it, and provide us with a spare key should you desire our services.

Do we need to have a meet n‘ greet every time I leave town? (top)

No.  Once we have your information and key (or lock box or alarm password) on file there is no need to have another meet ‘n greet.

Do you need my house keys? (top)

That depends on you.  Some of our clients prefer to have the Big Paw Care Giver use the code for the garage door to use as their entrance.  Others leave a hide-a-key or a padlock while a few never lock their doors.  You may opt for the conventional method - giving us a copy of your key for future or emergency purposes.

What do you do with my house key? (top)

first, for your peace of mind, make sure you copy a key that states on the key "do not copy".  Your key receives a coded number.  Your code and coded key are then kept under lock in separate safes until you choose to terminate any future services with us.  Once a service agreement is terminated we will return your key via mail or physical drop off at no charge.

Why would I choose a 24 hour pet sitting service? (top)

This service is mainly for dogs with a stay at home mom or dad.  If your furry friend is used to having you at home nearly 24/7 and suddenly you leave for a week or two, having a pet sitter for 14 hours leaves your furry friend home alone for 10 hours.  This could create abandonment issues which are very stressful to your dog and can lead to health problems, excessive barking, and a handful of other issues.  We offer this service because we don’t want to be accessories to harm.  In the long run, it is better for your dog and for your pocket to have a 24 hour pet sitter than to spend more time and money on behavior modification.

What do you do in case of medical emergency? (top)

First, when you sign our service agreement, you give us your emergency contacts as well as your vet information.  We do not pretend to being vets because we have Pet First Aid certifications.  The certification allows use to be more aware of certain symptoms.  We do not hesitate to take you pet to the vet.  Better safe then sorry.  We will first try contacting you and if we cannot reach you we will try your emergency contact before making our own decision and taking your pet to a vet of our choice.

We recommend having a credit card on file with your vet as well as seeking out 24 emergency clinics and having your credit card on file with them.

Life threatening events, were every second counts, we will not wait to contact or go long distances to reach your vet.  We will save you the receipt.

My pet needs sub-Q injections or pills, can you administer medications? (top)

Yes, we have extensive experience giving pills, liquids, and subcutaneous (sub-Q) injections.  All pet sitter must have experience as well as certifications in pet first aid through the American Red Cross.  There is no extra charge for this service.

During adverse weather conditions, who will watch my pet? (top)

We have an emergency plan just for that!  We have contacts with other pet sitter business in the Boulder/Denver area and help each other out so you’re your pets will always be accommodate.  We also plan around storms and make sure to be near the area we are to offer our services before the inclement weather arrives

Walking, Hiking, Running Answers

Do you require pets be vaccinated? (top)

The law requires that you have your pets vaccinated for Rabies and have current proof of vaccination.  For hiking services we recommend getting your dog vaccinated for lyme decease.  If he is not, we will not held responsible should they encounter lyme decease from a tick.

What is included in the walking service? (top)

Aside of a happy less destructive dog, we will refill water bowls with fresh clean water, feed and administer medications if necessary, and dry off wet and dirty paws if we are caught in rain or snow.  For more information please see our walking service page.

Will you walk my dog off leash? (top)

Unless you have your own private trail in the back of the house, all dogs will be leashed for liability purposes.  Just because your dog is a super great listener and has the off leash green tag does not mean he will listen to us.  We do not want to take responsibility for a lost or hurt dog as much as you do not want us to lose or return your dog hurt.

Why should I have my dog go on hikes? (top)

Aside for the health benefits of a 6 hour hike, this type of exercise is a great way to socialize your dog with others of his kind in an environment full of new senses!  Your dog learns about the world through scent, whereas humans rely more heavily on vision: your dog knows what a tree is because of its smell not because of what it looks like.

What is included in your hiking? (top)

For our Tour Deluxe and the Grand Tour, your pet will experience many stimuli, have their pictures taken, and enjoy a gourmet trail meal sponsored by Trail Waggers at the destination point!  For more information see our Hiking page.

Why should I have a dog runner? (top)

Exercise of course!  Why do people run?  Some people get pleasure in running (our runners for example), but mostly it is for our health.  When you take your dog to the doggie park, what is the first thing they do?  Run!  For certain canine breeds, daily walks are not enough.  They need more exercise to stay fit physically or mentally.  Don’t forget, large dog [working] breeds would march over 50 miles a day in search of food and chase their prey at high speeds for long periods adding many more miles to their feet.  With domestication, they no longer need to chase prey.   Today, studies show that well exercised dogs are healthier (less vet visit) and happier, and usually live longer than the average age of the breed.

What is included in the running? (top)

Having a happy healthy well exercised and tired dog is a great reward for busy pet owners.  However, we will make sure your dog has fresh water before we leave as well as clean wet paws and dry furs should we be caught in rain or snow.  For more information see our Running  page.

Can my dog really run 10K? (top)

Depending on your dog’s breed your dog can run even more!  However, just like humans, we will create a running program for your dog until we reach the running goal to insure a safe, slow, and steady progress without harming your beloved companion.  10k is mostly for the larger active breeds such as German Shepherds, Australian Cattle Dogs,  Labradors, Border Collies,
Rottweilers, and the list goes on.  Contact us to find out if your dog is capable of any of the running programs.  Most dogs can but it also depends on their health and age.  We even have a mini 1k for small toy breeds because everyone’s health is our priority!  We recommend you call your vet and ask if he or she recommend the exercise.  Your vet would know more about the health of your furry friend than we would!

Puppy Training, Dog Training, and Behavior Modification Answers

Do you require pets be vaccinated? (top)

The law requires that you have your pets vaccinated for Rabies and have current proof of vaccination.  During puppy training, it is ok if your puppy has yet received their shots as they might be too young.  However, for socializing, we do require your puppy have their first 3, 5, or 7-way shots.  Do don’t want them to become ill or pass anything to other puppies or dogs.

What’s the point of training? (top)

Training is extremely important for a many reasons.  First, your dog needs structure, order, and routine in his life; without limitations, he might develop a variety of problems, including stress and aggression.  Second, dogs need to know the hierarchy of the family or you could end up with an aggressive dog putting you and your family at risk not to mention the risk to others.  Lastly, training teaches the dog how we expect him to behave.  Training is a very useful tool to calm hyper active dogs or dogs with behavior problems because it gives them the answers, structure, and order they seek.  What is my purpose?  What is my role?  What is expected of me?  Are questions you dog is asking of you.  Your dog’s innate desire is to please you but it cannot do that with out communicating to him what we want.  Training is not only a means to communicate, it is equivalent to educating our children.  If we don’t teach them right from wrong, or what is to be expected of them, they could become little devils.  Can we blame them?  It is our fault for failing them as parents.  Training for you dog is equivalent to sending them to school  were you become their teacher through our direction.

What is included in your training? (top)

Our training is tailored specifically to your furry friend.  From puppy training to advanced off leash training to behavior modifications we will help you accomplish the attainable goal you seek.  Unlike group lessons, you will be getting 100% attention both to you and your dog.  We will work on weaknesses and use different learning methods that work for both you and your dog.  For more information see our Training page

What types of behavior problem can you help me with? (top)

We specialize in all types of aggressions including aggressions towards humans and other animals such as dog and cats.  Did you know that most aggressions are a result of property protection and not for blood sport or dominance?  We also specialize in abnormal responses such submissive behavior resulting in excited urination or abnormal issues resulting in excessive barking, destructive behavior, soiling, or whining.  We also deal with anxiety and a spectrum of phobias.  If we cannot resolve a certain phobia, as some they are very complex and unique to the individual pet, we will recommend you to someone who can.

My pet won’t stop barking!  Can you help? (top)

We most certainly can help decrease the barking but not eliminate it.  Your dog barks for a reason: to inform you about the presence of perceived intruders, in response to the unexpected, or to express emotion, to name a few.  We can teach your dog that in certain situations, it is ok to bark; the goal is to limit the dog’s response to 3-4 barks.  To take your dogs barking away would be like taking your ability to speak in emergency situations!

Other FAQs

Do you charge extra during the holidays? (top)

Unfortunately there is a surcharge.  We are taking time out from our own personal lives to care for your pets rather than spend that time with friends or family. $5.00 surcharge per daily drop by visit, walk, or special service will be applied.  A $10.00 surcharge per night for overnight pet sitting including 24 hour pet sitting.  Because trails are super packed during holidays, we do not offer hiking groups during such times. Holidays are:  New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year's Eve.
